Names You Can Trust presents the fourth release in its Swing-A-Ling “Now Sounds” 7-inch series, a limited collection of record presses celebrating the label’s long-running summertime Jamaican music dance and cookout that takes place in the relatively undiscovered enclaves of East Flatbush, Brooklyn. In the spirit of the Swing-A-Ling event, the “Now Sounds” series focuses on the unreleased, never-to-be-released, or utterly underground gems that may have otherwise been locked in the vaults for years to come. This year, the series lands in Minneapolis (via Jamaica) to shine a light on a modern roots slo-mo soul stepper from multi-instrumentalist Demz Fyah. Demz aka Demar Gayle is a gifted and classically trained keyboardist, who studied music at Edna Manley College in Kingston, Jamaica under Michael “Ibo” Cooper of Third World and later, Inner Circle. In the 2000s Demar took off as one of the founding members of Raging Fyah, holding down the keys in the roots revival band for multiple studio albums and international tours, as well as playing for notable reggae artists Richie Spice and Sizzla. After migrating from Jamaica to Minneapolis some years ago, Demz began uncovering years-worth of his own compositions and demos alongside NYCT alumni and Malamanya founder Tony Schreiner at his own Mpls-based Brown Bag Studios. This year’s “Now Sounds” pulls one of those archived demos into the processes of record reality. Voiced by Demz and re-recorded with Brown Bag’s vintage 1970s hand, the final touches add NY’s rhythm guitar wrangler, Brett Tubin aka Channel Tubes and an all new blissful Wurlitzer-dub version that has been mixed and freaked at the NYCT studio HQ, then ultimately pressed onto the preferred 7-inch format with a singular run of 500 copies. As always, the Swing-A-Ling series has been mastered and cut by renowned London engineer Frank Merritt at The Carvery for maximum sound system engagement.
